Bleaching powder is made by the reaction of chlorine with calcium hydroxide (hydrated lime). Because absolutely dry calcium hydroxide does not react with chlorine, chlorine can only be absorbed by calcium hydroxide. Therefore, in industry, hydrated lime containing less than 1% free water is used for chlorination, and the chlorine gas used also contains less than 0.06% water. The free water in these raw materials is used to hydrolyze chlorine to produce acids (HClO, HCl), which are neutralized by hydrated lime.
